NSW: Police arrest man after long distance chase

A man was arrested last night after leading police on a long-distance car chase from
the New South Wales southern highlands to Sydney.

Police say a man entered the the gates of the Goulburn Correctional Centre about 8
pm (AEST) in a Datsun Bluebird.

When guards approached him, he drove off through the centre of Goulburn.

Prison officers called the police, who pursued the stolen car along the Hume Highway,
past Berrima and Mittagong, and laid road spikes.

But despite two punctured front tyres, the man continued to flee until he hit a parked
car at Beverley Hills in Sydney's south.

A 24-year-old Moss Vale man was charged with a number of driving offences, and will
appear in Bankstown Local Court today.

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD admits his government will face more political heat over
the GST before the new tax comes in on July 1.

But Mr HOWARD says he believes Australians will support the new tax system once it's
up and running.

Mr HOWARD's told ABC radio he expects to be sailing into the gale over the GST until
the first of July.

His comments follow a Newspoll which found 56 per cent of Australians oppose the GST

Vic: Motorists urged to take breaks during Christmas travels

Motorists are being urged to take breaks during their travels over Christmas to reduce
the effects of driver fatigue.

The State Emergency Service says that across Victoria more than 300 volunteers will
take part in Operation Coffee Break.

SES Director RHYS MAGGS says that there'll also be more than 1,000 volunteers accredited
to perform road accident rescue.

He says SES volunteers attend more than 1,000 road accidents each year and holiday
periods are always cause for concern.

Mr MAGGS says motorists can be driving in unfamiliar areas, travelling too far without
a break and do not adhere to speed limits.

The number of people who have died on Victoria's roads this year stands at 367, compared
with 374 over the same time last year.

MELBOURNE, Aug 9 AAP - Federal cabinet could afford to defer building Sydney's second
international airport for another 15 years, an airport conference was told today.

The chief executive of lobby group Tourism Taskforce, Chris Brown, said Mascot Airport
could continue to serve international air traffic in the medium term.

A meeting of federal coalition MPs tomorrow is expected to discuss the controversial
airport proposal which has sparked ongoing demonstrations in Sydney's western suburbs.

An anti-Badgerys rally at Fairfield, in Sydney's west, yesterday attracted 1,500 people.

Mr Brown today predicted political pressure would force the federal government to put off
making a decision until after September 11 - the date for Sydney's local council elections.

Mr Brown said a second international airport in the Sydney basin area was eventually
inevitable.

But he said: "I'm offering a 15-year reprieve through which they (Badgerys Creek residents)
get together as a community to determine how the airport is too to operate, where they want an
avgas pipeline to be built and where (these) pipelines should be managed.

"The pipe is to get the fuel from Kurnell to Badgerys Creek. That would save taking it out
by trucks, which wouldn't go down too well, he said.

A delay would also give the New South Wales and local Sydney councils time to call a
moratorium on issuing new land and approving new housing development in the airport's
scheduled flight path.

NSW: New election poll shows Labor ahead by 14 per cent

SYDNEY, Feb 13 AAP - The New South Wales coalition was 14 per cent behind Labor just six
weeks away from the state election, a new poll said today.

Labor led 57 per cent to 43 per cent on a two-party preferred vote, according to the
Taverner Research poll, published in tomorrow's Sun-Herald.

As well, the poll showed Premier Bob Carr to be a more popular leader (48 per cent support)
than Opposition leader Kerry Chikarovski (29 per cent).

Mr Carr gained 81 per cent support for doing a good to average job, compared to Ms
Chikarovski's 58 per cent.

Conducted in four marginal seats - three of which are held by the Liberal party - the poll
showed Labor led on primary votes 44 per cent to 33 per cent, with 10 per cent still
undecided.

Labor was 16 per cent ahead in Strathfield, currently held by Liberal Bruce MacCarthy, 18
per cent ahead in the new seat of Ryde, six per cent ahead in Maitland, currently held by
Liberal MP Peter Blackmore and 18 per cent ahead in Kogarah, held by former Transport and
Tourism minister Brian Langton.

Taverner Research said it polled 800 people on Thursday and Friday in the four electorates
and asked how they would vote after being given the candidates' names.

The top five most important issues to be contested this election were: health (90 per
cent); law and order (82 per cent); education (78 per cent); jobs (74 per cent); and drugs
policies (74 per cent).

Labor's pulling out the big guns early with Foreign Minister KEVIN RUDD hitting the
hustings in the crucial Brisbane seat of Ashgrove today.

It will be the former prime minister's first foray into the unofficial Queensland election
campaign, which began last week when Premier ANNA BLIGH announced a March 24 poll date.

Mr RUDD will campaign alongside Ashgrove's Labor MP KATE JONES, who's going head to
head against Liberal National Party leader CAMPBELL NEWMAN.

Mr NEWMAN will leave the pair to it in the seat he must win if he's to become premier.

The LNP leader and Premier ANNA BLIGH are both in the inland town of Charleville, which
has been hit by minor flooding.
