Profile America for the 25th day of Black History Month. Onegroup of veterans is getting well-deserved, belated recognition forits exploits in World War II. The surviving pilots and groundcrewmen of the noted Tuskegee Airmen were invited guests atPresident Obama's inauguration, and George Lucas is working on amovie about the African-American squadron, called "Red Tails." Thepioneering unit fought in North Africa, Sicily, and Europe as the332nd fighter group. They shot down more than 100 Luftwaffe aircraftand were awarded two distinguished unit citations, as well as manyindividual medals. Among the nation's nearly 22 million veterans,2.3 million are African-American. This special edition of ProfileAmerica is a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.
