Putin gives medals to members of polar expedition to stake Russia's Arctic claim

President Vladimir Putin on Thursday presented the nation's highest award to members of a submarine expedition that planted a Russian flag on the seabed under the North Pole to stake the country's claim to Arctic resources.

Crews of the two Russian submersibles made the potentially hazardous voyage to the floor of the Arctic Ocean last August in support of Kremlin efforts to claim a mountain range under the Arctic Ocean that is believed to contain huge oil and gas reserves.
