NSW: Double murderer, 21, youngest in NSW to get life

A 21-year-old man convicted of the mutilation murders of former Wollongong mayor FRANK
ARKELL and a local shopkeeper has became the youngest person in New South Wales to be
jailed for life.

Justice TIMOTHY STUDDERT found MARK VALERA committed savage attacks, intending to kill
the men, and showed utter contempt for them after death by mutilating the bodies.

Describing his sentencing task as extraordinarily burdensome, the judge said of particular
concern was VALERA'S youth but the level of heinousness involved did not allow for less
than life.

He says if the New South Wales Supreme court had the power he would have set a non-parole period.
