Fed: Coonan says no reason to panic on doctors' insurance cover

The federal government says doctors have no reason to stop treating patients despitea move by the major medical indemnity provider to appoint a provisional liquidator.

Neurosurgeons -- one of the most high-risk groups -- threatened to stop treating allbut emergency patients following yesterday's move by United Medical Protection.

But Assistant Treasurer HELEN COONAN says doctors are covered both in public and privatepractice at least until June 30, and the government will legislate if necessary to backup the guarantee.

Senator COONAN has told ABC Radio there's absolutely no risk to doctors' futures orto their ability to practice.

She says options to solve the problem could include funding other insurers to protecthigh-risk practitioners or imposing a levy on all doctors.

But she says it's premature to speculate.
