VIC:Thousands tipped to turn out for Evans
MELBOURNE, Aug 11 AAP - Thousands are expected to flock to Melbourne's CBD on Friday
to celebrate Tour de France champion Cadel Evans' famous victory.
Evans, who became the first Australian to win the world's most prestigious cycling
race last month, touched down in Melbourne Thursday morning.
Friday's celebration will see the 34-year-old cycle 250m along St Kilda Rd from the
National Gallery of Victoria to Federation Square, where he will take to the stage to
address his fans.
Evans told reporters he was humbled by the level of support for his achievement at
home, as he arrived at Melbourne's Tullamarine Airport.
"When I started cycling in 1991, I don't think you could ever imagine such a thing
would happen for a cyclist," he said.
"I'm really just flattered, honoured - privileged."

WA:Rower's solo journey from Freo to Mumbai
PERTH, April 13 AAP - Pirates are a danger but they won't stop rower Roz Savage attempting
a solo journey from Fremantle to Mumbai to raise conservation awareness.
The British rower, author, motivational speaker and environmental campaigner is embarking
on her third solo rowing expedition.
Having rowed solo across the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, the 42-year-old is now attempting
to cross the Indian Ocean and become the first woman to row solo across three oceans.
Her departure has been delayed twice due to bad weather, but Savage finally left Fremantle
at sunrise on Wednesday.
She told AAP there were concerns about large waves and pirates during her 6500km journey,
but they were to be expected in the ocean.
"As if the ocean itself isn't challenging enough, we have to deal with pirates," she said.
"Piracy has been accelerating in recent months and we were looking at changing the route.
"We have actually changed my route three times already."
Savage said she would take precautions to protect herself from pirates by not posting
her whereabouts online, but said she did not think she was putting herself in danger.
"I just don't see it that way ... I just feel that this is the right thing for me be
to doing right now," she said.
Savage said it was important to her to raise awareness about environmental issues and
encourage people to act on the issues.
"What we need is more consciousness. We've got some big (environmental) challenges
ahead," she said.
"A lot of people feel like they can't do a lot, but we all have to do out best.
"It's not just about raising awareness, but to take some action too."
Savage said people should not wait for governments to save the environment but do little
things in their local communities to make a difference.
"We've got to start taking better care of the planet, not for the planet's sake but
for people," she said.
The journey is expected to take up to six months to complete.

FED:Botany Bay bids farewell to toxic waste
CANBERRA, Aug 18 AAP - A permit has been granted to allow a 40-year stockpile of hazardous
waste to be exported and destroyed overseas.
Environment Minister Peter Garrett on Wednesday granted an export permit to send the
hexachlorobenzene (HCB) waste stockpiled at Botany Bay in Sydney to Denmark.
It follows a decision by the Danish government to allow the waste to be imported and
destroyed there.
Mr Garrett said this would be done in a "safe and environmentally sound manner using
state of the art technology", after authorities determined Australia didn't have an adequate
facility to do the job.
The HCB waste was a by-product from the manufacture of chlorinated solvents from 1964 to 1991.
There is no longer any production of HCBs in Australia.

SYDNEY, April 10 AAP - A P-plater has been charged under new laws aimed at clamping
down on drivers who evade police chases after he was spotted performing a burnout, refused
to pull over, and returned a positive alcohol reading, police say.
The 27-year-old man allegedly performed a burnout on the Pacific Highway at Long Jetty,
on the NSW Central Coast, on Friday night.
Police attempted to stop him, but he sped away.
They chased him through several suburbs before his vehicle collided with a gutter.
He was breath-tested and returned a positive alcohol reading of 0.220, police say.
The P1 provisional licence-holder was arrested and charged with offences including
leading police on a pursuit, dangerous driving and failing to undergo breath analysis.
He is one of several people charged under the newly created Skye's law, named after
toddler Skye Sassine, who was killed during a police pursuit on New Year's Eve.

Fed: New indigenous body outlined by Aboriginal leader
CANBERRA, Aug 27 AAP - A new national indigenous representative body could hold its
first congress by October next year if the Rudd government adopts the proposal put to
it by Aboriginal Social Justice Commissioner Tom Calma.
Mr Calma handed his final report into establishing a body to replace ATSIC to Indigenous
Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin in Canberra on Thursday.
The report suggests the body should comprise an eight-member national executive, a
128 seat national congress and an ethics council to ensure its members are all "fit and
proper persons".
Mr Calma told the National Press Club that the first congress should be convened by October 2010.
"We have suffered from the absence of a strong national representative organisation
over the past five years," he said.
"As a result as a nation we have lacked the most fundamental of requirements for a
reconciled nation - a robust genuine partnership between government and Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander peoples."
The body, which has yet to be named, will be independent from government and operate
as a registered company, Mr Calma said.
He expects the commonwealth to contribute $5 million to get it up and running but says
after five years it will rely less and less on government funds.
Instead, it will draw on a $200 million investment fund - from all sources, including
corporate donations and charitable donations.
It would be established over the initial 10 years to ensure a sufficient recurrent
expenditure base for the organisation after that time.
"It is envisaged in 10 years the national representative body will be an organisation
that is self sufficient, self determining and truly independent of government," Mr Calma
said.

It was the sixth boat of asylum seekers intercepted by authorities in Australian waters
this year.
The federal opposition says the Rudd government's relaxed immigration policies have

Senator Evans said there is a worldwide increase in the number of people seeking asylum.
"There's a huge push factor applying at the moment...that's what's driving the current
problems," he said.
"The reality is that there's an awful lot of people fleeing Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka and Iraq."

NSW: Bashed man's body lies for days in home unit
EDS: Changes keyword from BODY to LEHMANN
By Simon Kirby, Police Reporter
SYDNEY, Feb 15 AAP - The body of a "quiet, gentlemanly" man beaten to death in his
Sydney unit may have remained undiscovered for up to two days, police say.
A family friend found the body of 66-year-old Bernd Lehmann at about 7.30pm (AEDT)
yesterday near the kitchen of his flat in Alt St, Ashfield, in the city's inner west.
Mr Lehmann had severe head injuries, police said, apparently from being beaten with
a blunt instrument.
Forensic officers were scouring the unit for clues, but police would not confirm reports
that a heavy figurine, retrieved for examination, was the suspected murder weapon.
"The crime scene is being examined, but the actual murder weapon has not been identified,"
Assistant Commissioner Frank Mennilli said.
Mr Mennilli said police would not know when Mr Lehmann died until an autopsy had been
completed, but he hadn't been seen for at least two days.
"We believe the last time may have been early Tuesday morning," Mr Mennilli said.
Police said Mr Lehmann lived alone and had no family in Australia.
Mr Mennilli described the killing as a particularly unpleasant crime.
"I think that when anyone gets killed in this way it's pretty bad, so that's why we're
putting all the resources available into trying to arrest the offender."
Mr Lehmann's next-door neighbour Satya Upadhaya told AAP he had accompanied the family
friend to the unit when the body was found.
He had come to check on Mr Lehmann as he had not heard from him for two days, Mr Upadhaya said.
He said the friend had a spare set of keys to Mr Lehmann's flat but was too afraid
to enter the unit alone.
"I went along with him and stood near while he opened the door and he walked straight
into the kitchen area," Mr Upadhaya said.
"All of a sudden when he reached the kitchen, he must have seen the body, because he
rushed outside."
Mr Upadhaya described Mr Lehmann as quiet man who had few visitors.
"He was very quiet, a very gentlemanly type," he said.
"I've never seen him talk to too many people."
Mr Lehmann often tended the unit block's common area garden on the weekends, he added.

Mr Hendy said Labor's transition arrangements over two years would still eventually
see AWAs done away with.
"They have done little to change the policy, in substance, that they announced in April,"
he said.
He said in regard to the $100,000 cut-off for collective agreements, most people above
that level would be in management positions and would not have been subject to the award
system in the past.
"Only 4.5 per cent of the employees in this country are above $100,000," he said.
"Where people are talking about the mining industry where there is large salary increases
for non-managerial staff, 65 per cent earn well below $100,000."
However, he did find one positive in Labor's proposal.
"We are happy that they have decided to keep the secondary boycott provisions in the
Trade Practices Act, and that is a good development, because Labor had proposed getting
rid of that for many, many years," he said.
"But look, that has been the law for 11 years in this country and they shouldn't be changing it."

SYDNEY, Feb 16 AAP - Increasing numbers of Australians are finding it hard to hold
onto their identity - and the ID thieves are getting away with millions of dollars.
A report published in the latest Choice Money and Rights magazine warns that savvy
fraudsters are finding easy pickings in illegally accessing people's personal and financial
details.
Choice said more Australians were now susceptible because of the combination of increasingly
widespread internet use, poor business practices and weak privacy laws.
Although thieves prefer to physically steal personal information from their victim,
vulnerable business databases make it easier for them to make fraudulent transactions.
They simply apply for credit, buy goods or open accounts in a person's name.
Last June, 40 million credit cards around the world, including 130,000 in Australia,
were caught up in a security breach involving the fraudulent access of information held
by a US company that processed credit cards.
In one Australian case in which thieves stole the identity of a North Queensland woman,
they used her personal details to create a credit card in her name.
Once approved, they then racked up $20,000 on the plastic.
In another, Victorian authorities successfully prosecuted a man for taking over the
identities of 10 people, which he created from stolen letters and wallets.
The crime is proving extremely inconvenient for everyone who is targeted, with victims
having to replace bank cards and clear their credit record.
Choice said the most recent report from the Securities Institute Research Centre of
Asia-Pacific (SIRCA) put the cost of ID fraud at $1.1 billion between 2001-02.
The report said financial regulations should be amended to make businesses more responsible
for protecting sensitive data.
It recommended more scope and funding be given to the privacy commissioner.
The national identity security strategy, now under development, should deliver more
secure ID management systems and methods allowing consumers more confidence over their
personal information, it said.
But consumers must also look out for themselves.
Steps they can take include choosing passwords that are difficult to guess, limiting
the amount of credit they have in accounts and even locking the letterbox.

Bangkok Post, Thailand, Travel Column.
By Imtiaz Muqbil, Bangkok Post, Thailand Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News
Apr. 29--The global Information Technology revolution will not cut demand for air travel; in fact, the opposite is likely to prove true, according to an environmental audit report released by Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) last week.
The report is part of a self-critical environmental audit conducted annually by SAS to monitor the impact of its operations on the environment.
SAS is one of the few global airlines that undertakes this self-scrutiny within the context of stringent local, regional and global laws that are making multinational businesses increasingly accountable.
For both cost-cutting and environmental reasons, this year's report is available only on the Internet at www.scandinavian.net/environment in PDF format. All printed copies have been dispensed with, and are likely to stay that way.
Addressing one of the more rigorously debated issues in recent times -- the impact of IT on high-yield traffic like business and meetings travel -- the report says that while a great deal of travel and meetings between people have indeed been replaced by telecommunications, which may also entail potential environmental benefits, there is no evidence that telecommunications will yield any overall reduction in air travel.
Studies show that errands of a more trivial nature, such as bank errands or more routine contact, are being replaced by telecommunications.
The need for face-to-face meetings in the creative area, such as research and development, marketing and design is increasing at the same time. Creative and intellectual processes that involve argument or negotiation demand physical contact, and IT is inadequate as a tool in these cases.
The report cites a study by George Mason University outside Washington, D.C. It shows that passenger transport declines in proportion to the increase in IT utilisation, but only in regions with low-tech businesses. Passenger transport, and air travel in particular, increases on the other hand within and to and from communities with high-tech businesses.
Another report, from Germany's University of Karlsruhe, quoted by the SAS report indicates that the Internet in general may lead to a higher demand for travel. It points out that chat friends will want to meet in person sooner or later, that individuals surfing the Internet for tourist destinations will decide eventually to travel to these destinations, and that anyone who has learned how to find good prices for a product via the Internet will continue to make purchases on the Internet.
This results in an overall higher demand for transport, especially air transport, the report asserts.
The airline business accounts for about 86 percent of the SAS Group's total environmental impact, chiefly from the use of fossil fuels, the combustion of which increases atmospheric carbon dioxide, contributing to global climate change.
Hotel operations and other businesses account for 12 percent and 2 percent respectively of the group's total environmental impact, chiefly because of energy and water consumption, but also through consumption of materials and chemicals as well as waste generation. One innovation is the introduction of an e-calculator (
Though the estimation of aircraft emissions is not yet a perfect science, passengers can calculate the impact their journey is having on the environment based on operating parameters like load onboard, flight profile, temperature, winds, fuel and engine/aircraft characteristics.
SAS believes this will become a major issue in future as the number of customers wanting to know how great an impact their employees' air travel or air cargo has on the environment has increased greatly in recent years. It believes that as stringent environmental policies become part of the corporate agenda, business travellers will be required to fly environmentally friendly airlines.
Similarly, the report says that SAS is requiring its own subcontractors to maintain certain environmental, ethical and social standards. This is because global watchdog groups monitoring multinationals are no longer willing to accept claims that sub-contractors are responsible for problems.
Even if the claims are true, the report says, it doesn't matter -- the revelation of discrepancies just as often affects the principal contractor.
SAS does its environmental audit in nearly as much depth as its financial one. For airlines, like most businesses, the trick is to reduce environmental emissions even while raising productivity and the bottom line. While the report outlines the progress the airline has made, inspite of the difficult economic conditions, it does come clean in areas where it has fallen short. The report admits that one of its unmet environmental targets was related to the delay in purchase of new environmentally-friendlier aircraft, equipped with more efficient engines, as a result of the economic crisis.
It owns up to the fines that some of its subsidiary airlines have had to pay for violating take-off and landing rules. It also notes that its subsidiary hotel group, Rezidor SAS Hospitality, saw its Dusseldorf property fined for not complying with the city's building and safety codes, which resulted in a fix-up costing several million dollars.
Another group hotel in Stavanger, Norway, was hit by several cases of Legionnaire's disease, some fatal, which were traced to legionella bacteria from the ventilation and air-conditioning system. The hotel has responded to all applicable regulations and maintenance routines and made it clear that it will take responsibility if it is proved that the hotel is liable. So far, no charges have been filed.

"It's an honor for InterNAP to be selected as the Internet connectivity provider by the organization that helps define Quality of Service over the Internet," said Tony Naughtin, president and CEO of InterNAP Network Services. "It is also rewarding for us to see so many of our customers ranked favorably in the Gomez Internet Scorecards."
InterNAP's connectivity service routes data to and from businesses across the Internet in a manner that minimizes data loss by avoiding the Internet's conventional traffic exchange process known as "peering." Private and public "peering" arrangements between backbone providers lead not only to congestion at peering points, but also to routing inefficiencies, two factors that significantly reduce the speed of data transmission across the Internet. InterNAP's P-NAP(R) facilities and ASsimilator(TM) technology orchestrate the routing of mission-critical data in a faster, more reliable, and more managed fashion than conventional Internet technology.
About InterNAP
Founded in 1996 in Seattle, InterNAP provides Internet connectivity that is faster and more reliable than conventional Internet service. InterNAP's patented route management technology provides direct data transmission across the major Internet backbones through a single connection from a customer's network to one of InterNAP's P-NAP facilities. InterNAP's customers bypass congestion points on the Internet, avoiding packet loss, latency, and other difficulties that can plague conventional Internet connectivity. InterNAP services are currently available in numerous key markets throughout the United States including Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, San Jose, and Seattle. Major companies and networks served by InterNAP include Amazon.com, Datek Online, Go2Net, ITXC, MindSpring, The NASDAQ, TheStreet.com, WebTV, and many others.
