Fed: Govt not planning asylum funding boost: Evans=2
A boat carrying asylum seekers believed to be from Afghanistan exploded, killing at
least three people and wounding dozens more on Thursday.
It was the sixth boat of asylum seekers intercepted by authorities in Australian waters
this year.
The federal opposition says the Rudd government's relaxed immigration policies have
led to the surge in arrivals.
Senator Evans said there is a worldwide increase in the number of people seeking asylum.
"There's a huge push factor applying at the moment...that's what's driving the current
problems," he said.
"The reality is that there's an awful lot of people fleeing Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka and Iraq."
Senator Evans said people are often unaware of countries' immigration policies when
they flee persecution and seek asylum.
"They (asylum seekers) take any opportunity they can get."
"I just don't think there's a strong pull factor in terms of our domestic policies," he said.
