SA: Icy ordeal ends for escapee
ADELAIDE, Aug 9 AAP - A man who spent an hour and a half in icy waters off Adelaide
to escape from police is suffering from hypothermia.
At 2.45am (AEST) today police stopped a car at the West Beach boat ramp, west of the
CBD, and spoke to two male occupants, Senior Constable Mick Abbott said.
They searched the car and found a knife and other property they believed was stolen.
They tried to arrest the two men but one of them struggled with police and then ran
off and escaped by plunging into the icy water at West Beach.
A search by the police helicopter and water police found the 45-year-old from nearby
Seaton 90 minutes later.
He was taken to the Flinders Medical Centre suffering from hypothermia and is expected
to be released from hospital later today.
He is also expected to face charges including escaping police custody, carrying an
offensive weapon and unlawful possession.
The man who was with him, a 37-year-old of no fixed address, has also been charged
with carrying an offensive weapon and unlawful possession.
Both will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday morning.
