NSW: Police reject racial motivation in El Masri incident

Police have denied targeting Bulldogs National Rugby League player HAZEM EL MASRI and
his manager for questioning .. because of their race.

EL MASRI and his manager ADAM HOUDA say they were surrounded by nine police officers
near a railway station in Sydney's south-west .. at 11.15 pm last Thursday .. after they
refused to show identification.

The pair have said they believe the action was racially motivated.

But acting assistant commissioner FRANK MENNILLI says the men were spoken to because
they were sitting on a bench outside shops late at night .. where there'd recently been
break-ins and vandalism .. and nationality had nothing to do with it.

Mr MENNILLI says they were sitting on a council bench .. not in a cafe as they claimed.

EL MASRI and Mr HOUDA have said they plan to lodge a complaint about the incident.
