VIC:Thousands tipped to turn out for Evans
MELBOURNE, Aug 11 AAP - Thousands are expected to flock to Melbourne's CBD on Friday
to celebrate Tour de France champion Cadel Evans' famous victory.
Evans, who became the first Australian to win the world's most prestigious cycling
race last month, touched down in Melbourne Thursday morning.
Friday's celebration will see the 34-year-old cycle 250m along St Kilda Rd from the
National Gallery of Victoria to Federation Square, where he will take to the stage to
address his fans.
Evans told reporters he was humbled by the level of support for his achievement at
home, as he arrived at Melbourne's Tullamarine Airport.
"When I started cycling in 1991, I don't think you could ever imagine such a thing
would happen for a cyclist," he said.
"I'm really just flattered, honoured - privileged."
